Marilyn Stowe becomes mayoress for the day

She may have been second choice, but is unlikely to care. When the Mayor of Ripon's partner and usual consort was unable to accompany him to a formal function last week, up stepped Marilyn Stowe.

Mrs Stowe, a top divorce lawyer, was invited by the mayor to attend a service in Ripon, North Yorkshire, welcoming home the 9th Army Air Corps from Afghanistan. Ripon's mayor, Councillor Andrew Williams, is a practice manager at Mrs Stowe's Harrogate-based family law practice, Grahame Stowe Bateson.

Mrs Stowe tells People: "It was a marvelous day; very moving and emotional. For a Jewish woman to be taking part in the ceremony as the representative of Ripon was quite something. I was very proud to be there."

"It was a great opportunity for me to publicise my support for what those boys are doing in Afghanistan."

Mrs Stowe co-founded the company 25 years ago. In 2003, she was involved in discovering the medical evidence that helped clear Sally Clark of murdering her two sons. She is thought to be the first female solicitor outside London to be elected a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. She lives in Leeds.
