McCartney Divorce Well Covered (Or Miscovered)

The media relentlessly pursues info on McCartney/Mills divorce hearings.

When celebrity news hits, photographers and journalists cover all the bases. The playing field this time is London’s Royal Court of Justice, where Sir Paul McCartney and estranged wife Heather Mills head for their divorce hearing.

Two news helicopters were hovering over the imposing building, while satellite trucks, TV vans, and radio cars assembled all over the road. Heather Mills arrived an hour early in a tinted black vehicle, from which she emerged only after safely out of the immediate range of the media cameras. McCartney, ever the cheery Beatle, gave reporters a “good morning” before entering the building, and a polite “no comment” on his way out.

Mills, an English activist and former glamour model, married Paul in 2002, and has seen her share of media harassment. In October 2005, she won damages from The People newspaper for falsely reporting that she suffered a miscarriage. Her and McCartney’s divorce has also been widely reported, or perhaps misreported.

Marylin Stowe, a divorce lawyer writing in The Times, has called it “one of the most high-profile marriage breakdowns in history.” Mills has been accused of embellishing her own life story, which includes losing a leg in an accident and working for the benefit of amputees. She has been called a “gold-digger,” as well as a “Hooker, Liar, Porn Star, Fantasist, Trouble Maker, Shoplifter,” by daily tabloid newspaper The Sun. She has also reported receiving many death threats. Whatever the truth of the matter, Heather Mills has undoubtedly been abused by tabloid media.

Paul McCartney has, on multiple occasions, defended his ex-wife in regards to these claims. “I will always love Paul,” Mills told BBC News television. “He is the father of my child.”
