Children’s minister writes to adoptive parents

Children’s Minister Edward Timpson has written to parents who have adopted children from the care system.

Headed ‘Dear Adopter’, the letter offers “sincere thanks” for the commitment and energy of adoptive families.

It continues:

“In my two years as Children’s Minister I have met with many of you, and I know that too many of you feel that the love and commitment created within your families is not always met by the support you and your children need from mainstream and specialist services.”

The Minister goes to highlight a number of reforms and recently introduced measures which the government claims will accelerate and encourage adoption. These include a faster approvals process, an online adoption information resource, £17 million of investment in voluntary adoption agencies, and the Adoption Support Fund. The latter consists of more than £19 million and will be used to provides a range of therapies for children from troubled backgrounds involving abuse and neglect, in order help them settle in their new lives and come to terms with their experiences.
