Legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin reaches divorce settlement

Divorce|News|January 8th 2013

The third wife of astronaut Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin will receive approximately half his assets in a recently agreed divorce settlement.

Lois Driggs Cannon will receive more than $230,000, plus 50 per cent of the profits from Aldrin’s stocks and business holdings. According to celebrity site TMZ, she will also receive $9,500 in monthly maintenance payments– known as ‘spousal support’ in the US – as well as 30 per cent of Aldrin’s  annual income, thought to be more than $600,000.

Cannon will also keep the couple’s Mercedes, which features a licence plate reading ‘MOONGIRL’.

In England and Wales, unless all those assets were earned during the marriage, it is likely his third wife would only receive sufficient assets to cover her life-long reasonable needs.

Aldrin and Cannon were married for 23 years but separated in June 2011, with Aldrin filing for divorce just one day later, according to reports. He cited “irreconcilable differences”.

Buzz Aldrin, now 82, was the lunar module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission and became the second person to walk on the moon after mission commander Neil Armstrong on July 20 1969.

He had three children with first wife Joan Archer and is also a retired United States Air Force pilot.
