MP castigates anti-gay marriage group that used her picture on leaflet

News|January 17th 2013

A Tory MP has blasted an anti-gay marriage group for using her image in a leaflet campaigning against same-sex marriage.

Sarah Newton, Conservative MP for Truro and Falmouth, said she is “appalled” that her picture has been used without her permission in a campaign against gay marriage.

The Coalition for Marriage handed out leaflets in the Cornwall area which suggested people should object to David Cameron’s plans to legalise same-sex marriage.

The MP criticised the Coalition for Marriage and said that their inclusion of her picture wrongly suggested she supported the group and its beliefs.

Mrs Newton said:

“I do not endorse the leaflets. I am appalled that the Coalition for Marriage have chosen to use a photo of me without permission, apparently to give residents the impression that I support the claims made within their leaflet.”

Despite being appalled at the anti-gay marriage group Mrs Newton has invited its representatives to speak at a public event, alongside the gay rights charity Stonewall. She will consider views put forward at this event before voting on gay marriage in Parliament.
