Royal Pavilion BrightonA 35 year-old Brighton man has offered to divorce his much older wife to save her from eviction after he was convicted of a public order offence.

But Brighton and Hove City Council insist the eviction must go ahead, local newspaper the Argus reports.

Chris Harvey, a former friend of media personality Katie Price, attracted national media attention when he married Norma, who is 34 years his senior, in 1999.

The couple now live in Whitehawk, an estate on the edge of Brighton. Mrs Harvey, now 67, is reported to be in poor health.

Earlier this month Mr Harvey was involved in an altercation outside their home and later convicted of assault and a public order offence.

He told the paper:

“I was chased by a bloke that we were having an ongoing argument with. It’s true that I kicked out at him and I was convicted in court. But it’s not fair that the antisocial behaviour people are going to kick my wife out as well. She’s done nothing wrong.”

He added:

“I’ve offered to divorce her so she can stay but the council is having none of it. It said it didn’t matter if we were divorced, my wife would still have to go.”

Talking of his distress at the situation, Harvey continued:

“My wife is elderly and she is really sick. No matter what I’ve done, she doesn’t deserve this.”

A spokeswoman for the council said:

Antisocial behaviour is not tolerated and we will always offer support and try to work with an individual to try to improve a situation. Legal action is a last resort.”
