Traditional Islamic divorce is carried out by the husband pronouncing ‘talaq’ (I divorce you) three times, although views differ on the required waiting period and actions to be carried out between each declaration. The divorce becomes final after the third pronouncement.
A Dubai man asked the country’s Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities to rule on the validity of a talaq sent via SMS, Emirati newspaper Al-Ittihad reports. He had split from his wife after an argument. He confronted the woman at her father’s house and pronounced talaq, then said it a second time following a further argument. The man later sent at third talaq via text message.
