Musician Pete Wentz recalls drug use and divorce

Pete WentzMusician Peter Wentz has admitted that overuse of prescription drugs contributed to his 2011 divorce from Ashlee Simpson.

The 33 year-old is bass player and lyricist for rock band Fall Out Boy. He married the actress and singer-songwriter in 2008, in a ceremony officiated by her father. They had one son together, called Bronx Mowgli, before Simpson filed for divorce in 2011, citing irreconcilable differences. She applied for primary custody of their son, as well as maintenance payments from Wentz, who didn’t want the divorce.

The musician now says he began abusing prescription drugs after the members of Fallout Boy went on an extended hiatus in 2009.

He told the Rolling Stone magazine:

“I was probably physically and mentally addicted. It started from insomnia and anxiety from flying, then it spiralled.”

He added:

“I felt like a loser already. I’d basically gone from being the guy in Fall Out Boy to being the guy, who, like, hangs out all day. I didn’t see how I’d ever come out on the other side.”

After the couple separated, he also began to suffer from paranoia, he reports.

“I was scared of everything. I thought there were always people listening to me. Like, I had my house searched for bugs. It was crazy.”

Wentz later recovered following therapy. He wanted to be a good father to four year-old son Bronx.

Since the split, Ashlee Simpson has claimed she and Wentz married too young.

Fall Out Boy were formed in 2001 and have sold more than 7.5 million albums.
