Robert Sand pleaded guilty to failing to pay for three children from two marriages for more than a decade, as well as travelling abroad with intent to avoid making payments.
The car auctioneer travelled first to Florida and then, in 2000, to Thailand, failing to make court-ordered payments of $750 per week to his first wife and $625 per week to his second.
Late last year he was arrested in the Philippines and deported back to the US. By then he was listed by the US Department of Health and Human Services as the country’s most wanted ‘deadbeat dad’.
Sand’s former wives did not attend the Long Island hearing, but reportedly urged the judge not to imprison Sand so he could immediately begin working to pay back the debt. The federal probation service made a similar recommendation.
Judge Joseph Bianco said the Sand’s case was the most “most egregious” case he had encountered.
“Neither court orders nor the familial bond meant anything to him as he fled to avoid his obligations….This Father’s Day will find Sand behind bars, finally being held to account for his abandonment.”
