Choosing a quality solicitor by Stowe Family Law

Stowe Family Law|May 15th 2015

The end of a marriage is very stressful at the best of times, and the search for legal representation can be yet another unwanted burden. In order to emerge from a divorce in the best possible position, it is essential to instruct a quality solicitor.

However, it can be difficult to know where to start as there is a plethora of options available. Fortunately, some reliable indications can help you distinguish between the good and the mediocre divorce lawyers.

A good family solicitor will have an excellent word-of-mouth reputation, so try talking to friends and family who have already been through the process. They will be able to tell you stories about firms and lawyers who gave good service, and help you avoid those who do not. Even in the digital age, word-of-mouth still carries a lot of weight.

Be mindful of solicitors who keep looking at the clock during your first appointment. This is not a promising sign. A top quality solicitor will care about your case and give you their full attention. If they are checking the time during your first appointment, that should tell you how much they value you as a client.

Keep an eye out for a green and black Law Society Family Law logo on the firm’s building or stationary. It may seem trivial at first but this logo, which depicts two adults and a child, is a demonstration that the firm has been judged by their peers as a competent and caring. If the firm has a Law Society Advanced logo, it has reached an even higher standard of service.

It is important to be wary of solicitors who do not give you a straight answer if you have questions about costs. It is a very important part of the divorce process so it is natural to wonder how your finances will be resolved. If your solicitor cannot give you answers within a qualified range of parameters, you should reconsider having them advise you.

A good divorce lawyer is very straight forward. They will not get your hopes up about the possible outcomes or costs as they will have experienced similar cases before. This is one of the benefits of someone with the appropriate knowledge and experience. If they have communicated this properly, you should feel much more confident going forward.

However, if you come away from an appointment with your solicitor and do not have a clear idea of how your case will proceed, you need to be wary. A quality solicitor will clearly discuss and explain your options, as well as asking you what you want.

That said, it is imperative that you explain your requirements. If you don’t, it is not the lawyer’s fault if you are unhappy at the conclusion of your divorce. Be clear with them. It will give them a much better idea about how to approach your case.

These tips will help you find the best legal advice available. Yes, it can be daunting but it is important that you start the next phase of your life in the best possible position. That begins with a quality solicitor.
