The occasionally contentious Children and Social Work bill has received royal asssent.
The new Act makes a range of changes to the education and care systems, as well as adopton procedures. These include the introduction of more rigorous training for social workers and compulsory relationships education in schools.
Plans to include an additonal provision allowing councils to opt out of their statutory child protection duties for defined periods in order to explore alternative arrangements were later dropped by the government.
