Mother plans divorce from husband who murdered their children

Divorce|January 6th 2018

A mother from County Carlow in south-eastern Ireland has begun proceedings to divorce her husband more than four years after he murdered their children.

Their two sons were found in the boot of her estranged husband’s car on July 29 2013. They were ten and five.

Their father had run up gambling debts. He told his wife he’d take the boys to go bowling in the town of Carlow, The Irish Post reports, but instead drove in the opposite direction, to Westport on the north-western coast of Ireland. Their he killed the brothers and then tried to kill himself by driving into a wall.

The following year he received two life sentences for murder. Talking to The Irish Sun, mother Kathleen said he has now decided to formally end their marriage. He will be send a ‘notice of proceedings’ at Arbour Hill Prison in Dublin.

She told the paper:

“My divorce from this monster should be completed at some stage in 2018. He will be getting papers in prison any day now and I’m looking forward to the day when my connection to him will end. The divorce isn’t about money or anything, it’s about him not having any rights.”

Their marriage had been turbulent and she believes, she explained, that had really wanted to kill her but he turned on the children instead because she would have put up a fight.

“He knew I wouldn’t be overpowered and that’s why he took my wonderful children.”

It’s a chilling thought that until a generation ago Irish law would have kept her chained to him until one of them died.
