How Much Does Probate Cost?

  1. Advice in interview about the estate administration process and duties of executors/administrators
  2. Enquiries to attempt to establish the whereabouts of any will
  3. Preliminary enquiries to ascertain the assets and liabilities of the Estate
  4. Preparation and supply of documentation required to apply for the Grant of Representation including the HMRC forms and Oath for Executor/Administrator
  5. Making an application to the Probate Registry for the Grant of Representation
  6. Collecting in the assets of the Estate
  7. Arrangements for publication of statutory notices advertising for creditors (if required)
  8. The discharge of any liabilities of the Estate including testamentary expenses
  9. Preparation of the Estate Accounts for approval
  10. Distribution of the Estate according to the terms of the Will or the Intestacy Rules

Costs

The prices below act as a guide for the cost of our probate services. Costs will vary and once we establish your requirements, the number of assets in the Estate and have examined the terms of the will or the intestacy provisions in each case, we will provide a clear cost for the administration fees.

1. Application for a grant of probate or grant of letters of administration (execution only) where a full HMRC IHT400 account is not required.

This package includes:

  1. Extracting the grant of probate/letters of administration on behalf of the executor/administrator
  2. Completion of HMRC account IHT 205 based upon information supplied by the executor/administrator
  3. Supply of the Grant so that the executor/administrator can deal with the administration themselves

Approximately £850 plus VAT (£1,020) and disbursement listed below

2. Application for a grant of probate or grant of letters of administration (execution only) where a full HMRC account IHT400 is required

This package includes:

  1. Extracting the grant of probate/letters of administration on behalf of the executor/administrator
  2. Completion of an IHT 400 and supplementary pages based upon information supplied by the executor/administrator

Approximately between £1,250 plus VAT (£1,500) and £2,000 plus VAT (£2,400) and disbursements listed below

Disbursements

  • Court fees of £155 payable upon application for the Grant of Probate and a further 50p for additional copies of the Grant (the level may be subject to legislative changes)
  • A fee of £5 payable to the Solicitor or Commissioner for Oaths who attends you for swearing of the Oath with an additional £2 for any exhibits to the Oath
  • Publication fees for placing statutory notices to creditors (if desired). These are normally in the region of £175 plus V.A.T.

Hourly rates

Probate package costs are based on the hourly rates below.

Jane Gray, Senior Solicitor £260 per hour plus V.A.T.
Wendy Scarr, Senior solicitor £250 per hour plus V.A.T.
Probate Assistant £195 per hour plus V.A.T.

We do not charge a Value element based on the value of the estate. The above prices are based on the hourly rate.
