Watsonville CaliforniaA man from Watsonville in California has been reunited with his son a year after the boy was abducted.

After Carlos Zepeda split with former partner Maria Cortez, the parents shared custody of their son according to the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office. Zepeda had begun the process of filing for sole custody when Cortez disappeared from her home in San Jose while looking after the baby, then just one year old.

District Attorney’s Inspector Raul Castellanos said:

“[Zepeda] went to pick up son for his weekend visit, and he was gone.”

The missing mother and child were eventually traced to Houston in Texas, where she was arrested and charged with child abduction. Cortez is now awaiting extradition back to California, the Register-Pajaronian reports.

Zepeda’s son, meanwhile, was quickly flown back to Watsonville for a reunion with his father.

“Within 24 hours we had someone in the air, and he was back home,” said Inspector Castellanos.
