More about our Camden family law solicitors near you

More about our Camden family law solicitors near you

  • When should I speak to a family law solicitor during a divorce or separation?

There isn’t a single “right” moment. Many people speak to a family law solicitor earlier than they expect. At times, this could be before telling their spouse, sometimes when separation is first being discussed.
That early conversation can help you understand where you stand before decisions are made about children, finances or the family home.
Our Camden divorce solicitors often see that clearing things up early avoids problems later. A lawyer can explain what usually needs attention straight away, and what can wait.

  • What can a family law solicitor help me with during divorce proceedings?

A family law solicitor’s role is often broader than people expect. As well as dealing with the divorce paperwork, they explain each stage of the process, help with arrangements for children, and guide discussions about money. They can also step in when communication becomes difficult, which often helps stop matters from escalating.
Our team regularly supports clients through financial discussions that follow the same principles used in divorce finances, so decisions aren’t rushed or made in isolation.

  • How are financial matters typically resolved during a divorce?

Financial matters usually start with both people sharing full details of their finances. That information is then used to talk through:

    • Income
    • Property
    • Pensions
    • Future needs

There isn’t an automatic formula, and outcomes depend on the situation. Many people reach an agreement through discussion and negotiation, without going to court. If terms are agreed, they can be made legally binding.

A divorce solicitor can explain how this process normally works and what the courts are likely to look at.

  • What happens to children’s arrangements when parents separate?

The starting point is always the child’s welfare. In everyday terms, arrangements usually cover where the child lives, how time is shared, holidays and staying in touch.
Parents are encouraged to agree on these matters where they can, as lower conflict is generally better for children. Where disagreements continue, it can help to understand how arguments during separation and divorce can affect children, and what steps might reduce that impact.
A family law solicitor can explain how the law approaches these decisions if agreement isn’t possible.

  • How much does divorce cost?

We offer a fixed-fee divorce option for cases that are straightforward. For divorces that include financial, property, or child arrangement issues, your solicitor will discuss your case with you and provide an initial cost estimate. Further guidance is available in our divorce costs and family law information.

  • Can a family law solicitor help resolve matters without going to court?

Yes. In many cases, the first aim is to avoid court. A family law solicitor can help with negotiation, mediation and other non-court approaches, which are often quicker and less stressful.
Our Camden family law experts regularly help clients explore these options before the court is considered.
Court is usually a last resort, and a family lawyer can explain when it might be needed and what that would mean in practice.

  • Which family court will I attend if I’m based in Camden?

If a hearing is required, clients based in Camden will usually attend the Central Family Court at First Avenue House (WC1V 6NP) in Holborn. Our solicitors will ensure you are fully prepared and supported throughout the process.

  • Where is the Central Family Court and how do I get there from Camden?

The Central Family Court is located at First Avenue House in Holborn, close to Lincoln’s Inn Fields, the Royal Courts of Justice and the British Museum. It is around a 5-minute walk from Holborn Underground Station via High Holborn towards Kingsway and First Avenue House.

From our Camden office at 13 Hawley Crescent (NW1 8NP), the court is approximately a 20–25 minute journey via the Northern Line from Camden Town to Tottenham Court Road, connecting to the Central Line towards Holborn. Nearby cafés include Pret A Manger and Starbucks on High Holborn and independent favourite Knockbox Coffee on Lamb’s Conduit Street.

If driving, parking is available at Bloomsbury Square and NCP Covent Garden car parks both within walking distance of the court.

  • What can your in-house accountancy team support with?

We understand that finances are never easy to discuss, especially when a relationship has separated. This is why having an expert who is recognised by the Legal 500 – like the Stowe Family Law team – is essential. We’re able to discover international assets, complex financial structures, as well as provide accurate housing valuations. No matter your financial situation, our Camden lawyers are here to help.

  • Do I need a cohabitation agreement?

Unfortunately, the law currently doesn’t provide the same protection to unmarried couples as it does those who are married. Due to this, it’s important to establish a cohabitation agreement – also known as a living together agreement. This is to ensure you and your partner have the rights you deserve. Our cohabitation solicitors can draft an agreement that includes what to do if you sell your joint property, how the bills should be paid, and much more.

We’ll tailor the agreement to your situation, so choose us to support every stage of your life.

  • Can your Camden solicitors aid my financial divorce settlement?

Every marriage is individual and part of that is the financial situation. Working through years of finances can be overwhelming and sometimes emotional, which is completely understandable. This is why having an expert in your corner can help.

Financial settlements (sometimes known as divorce settlements) can include property, investments, pensions, assets you owned prior to getting married, as well as international assets. We’ll work with you to understand your situation to provide you with the best possible settlement that ensures you have everything you need to move forward with life after divorce.

Our team has years of experience in financial settlements during a divorce, so you can trust us for sound advice and empathetic support.

  • Does Stowe Family Law provide non-confrontational options to resolving family disputes?

Here at Stowe, we recognise that going to court isn’t right for everyone. It uses time, money, and long delays that cause even more time and money! This is why we have multiple alternative routes, like arbitration, collaborative law, and mediation.

If you’re not sure which non-confrontational dispute solution is right for you, book a consultation with our internal Client Care team who will listen to your circumstances, and recommend the right solution and lawyer for your needs.
