How much a divorce costs will depend on the complexity of the issues involved. After an initial conversation, your solicitor can provide a cost estimate based on your individual circumstances. Where financial matters, property, or child arrangements need to be resolved, this will be reflected in the overall cost. You can read more in our guide to divorce costs, and guide to our family law fees. For straightforward divorces, we also offer a fixed-fee divorce option.
Yes. Most cases are resolved without the need for court, but if a hearing is required your case will usually be heard at Norwich Magistrates’ Court and Family Court, The Law Courts, Bishopgate, Norwich, NR3 1UR.

Divorce in England and Wales follows a set legal process. One or both spouses apply to the court to confirm that the marriage has broken down. After a required waiting period, the court makes a Conditional Order, confirming that the legal requirements have been met.
The Final Order legally ends the marriage. Financial matters and child arrangements are not decided automatically as part of the divorce and are dealt with separately, either by agreement or by the court. This is explained further in our divorce in England and Wales complete guide, which many clients find helpful when first navigating the process.
Our divorce solicitors in Norwich regularly advise on how these steps fit together in practice.
Divorce in England and Wales follows a fixed legal timetable. Even where both people agree, the process usually takes at least six months from application to Final Order. The court cannot complete a divorce more quickly than this.
Timescales are often longer where financial matters or arrangements for children still need to be resolved. This is one of the most common reasons for delay, particularly when one spouse is slow to engage, a concern when assessing how long a spouse can delay a UK divorce.
Once these wider issues are settled, the remaining legal steps usually progress without difficulty.
You are not legally required to use a solicitor to get divorced. Some people manage the application themselves, particularly where there are no children and finances are straightforward.
However, divorce often involves wider legal issues, including property, pensions, and future financial ties. Any agreement reached needs to be formally approved by the court to be effective. Many people seek advice at an early stage, often when considering divorce, to understand the implications before decisions are made.
There is no automatic rule that finances are split 50/50 in a divorce. The court’s focus is on reaching a fair outcome based on specific legal factors. This includes income, assets, pensions, housing needs, and the needs of any children.
In some cases, this results in equal sharing, but in many it does not. Any financial agreement must be approved by the court to bring financial claims to an end.
