A 21 year old American woman told a undercover detective posing as a hitman that killing her husband would be “easier than divorce”.
Julia Charlene Merfeld of Muskegon in Michegan was arrested after telling the detective:
“It’s not that we weren’t getting along … terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him. You know, I didn’t have to worry about the judgment of my family. I didn’t have to worry about breaking his heart.”
During the conversation, caught on video in April, Merfeld told the officer:
“This is kind of like a clean getaway. I mean, it’s going to break my heart when it happens, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about for awhile.”
She asked him to carry out the murder of her 27 year-old husband in the most “painless” way possible, and preferably outside their home.
“If you can get him outside, that would be great. But if you absolutely can’t I would understand.”
Merfeld pleaded guilty to soliciting a murder and is already in jail prior to sentencing later this month, when she faces a minimum of six years behind bars.
According to a report on Opposing Views, Merfield planned to pay the hitman using her husband’s $400,000 life insurance policy. Police were alerted to the plot by a co-worker.
Merfeld and her former husband had two children, who were staying with relatives in New Jersey at the time of the planned murder.
