This morning, Stowe Family Law London’s Sarah Snow appeared on Share Radio to talk about the new divorce centres with presenter Georgie Frost.
As part of a ‘divorce special’ on the digital radio station’s Relative Values show, Sarah explained the rationale behind these new centres. Unlike some media reports, getting divorced will not be akin to picking up a TV license, she explained.
Sarah said that there is a significant backlog of uncontested divorces at the family courts, so the new centres will reduce the burden on judges. They will aim to reduce the application process from 2-3 weeks to 48 hours. However, she added, financial disputes and matters concerning children will still be heard by a judge.
She said that the grounds for divorce have not changed, so the centres will not make divorce any easier or more difficult to prove.
Following a brief discussion about the kinds of cases Sarah deals with as a family lawyer, Georgie Frost asked if she had become pessimistic about relationships. Sarah said that she was still a believer in love and marriage.
