What’s It Like to Go to Leeds Combined Court Centre?
Going to court, no matter the reason, is something that should be taken seriously.
How to prepare. Bring your hearing letter and case number, any documentation you need for your hearing, and something to eat and drink to court (with the exception of alcohol). If you're unsure what to bring, consult with your lawyer.
If you are required to meet with your partner during the hearing, prepare yourself so that you can stay cool and composed. Aside from that, you may find going to court unpleasant, embarrassing, or intimidating—but an experienced lawyer can help you get through it.
You can wear whatever you wish, however it is recommended that you dress appropriately. Except for religious reasons, you are not permitted to wear anything on your head.
Arriving at the court. Make a plan for how you'll get to the court before the big day so you're adequately prepared. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the time specified on your hearing letter. You may have to wait a bit depending on the sequence in which the cases are seen.
When you arrive to court, your belongings and pockets will be searched in the same way that they would be at an airport. This is due to the fact that certain items, such as weapons and drink, are not permitted in the court. However, unlike at an airport, you will get your belongings returned when you depart.
During the hearing. Put your phone on quiet and refrain from taking photographs or video. When a member of staff announces "all rise," it implies the judge/magistrate is going to enter the room. You will be informed when it is your turn to talk and what you must do. Again, this might be stressful, but your lawyer will be there to help you.
