Adoption waiting time falls sharply

The time spent children in care spend waiting for adoption has fallen sharply, new figures reveal.

The average time between entering the care system and being placed with a new family is now 533 days, the Adoption Leadership Board reports, down from 656 days in the year to 2013. The overall number of children in care still waiting for a new family has also fallen by 40 per cent, the figures suggest, to just 2,810 at the end of March this year. A year ago the figure was 4,680.

More than a third of children (36 per cent) are now placed with a new family within a year, up from just 27 per cent in 2014.
