Cost of Norwegian shipping magnate’s divorce hits £10 million

The founder of Viking Cruises and his estranged wife have spent nearly £10 million on their divorce before the hearing has even taken place.

The 4,000-strong company was founded in 1997 by Norwegian billionaire businessman Torstein Hagen. He and Ellen-Karine have launched divorce proceedings at the High Court in London as the couple have links to England. According to The Times, their legal costs now total an astronomical £100,000 a day.

Mrs Justice Roberts has now begun consideration of the key evidence in the private divorce dispute. The hearing is expected to last three weeks. Nevertheless, the Judge told the media they could name the couple and outline the basic details of the case.

Mrs Hagen wants half her husband’s fortune. However neither the sum in question nor her husband’s self-reported net worth can be reported the Judge ruled. She noted only that it was “very substantial”.

Mrs Justice did allow the media report their legal costs to date, however: Mr Hagen has spent almost £5 million to date and his estranged wife £4.5 million.

Reporting restrictions would be reviewed, added Mrs Justice Roberts, as the case progressed. She urged the couple to reach a negotiated settlement.

The case continues.
