Divorce is an isolating and frustrating experience. That’s why it’s important to have the best family law solicitors Cardiff has to offer on your side; it’s also why you can benefit from the many post-divorce resources Cardiff has to offer.
Below is a brief list of support groups, advice centres and more that you might benefit from, compiled by our Cardiff lawyers. If you need further help, feel free to contact us.
Family Mediation Cymru
Family Mediation Cymru are specialist family mediators offering high quality, professional mediation across South East Wales.
Family mediation is a process in which an impartial mediator helps divorced or separated people to make decisions about their children, finances and property. A trained mediator has a neutral role in helping couples to negotiate an agreement, and the decisions made are their own.
Mediation is a unique process and does not involve counselling or therapy. Nor is it arbitration where a third party makes the decisions. No legal or other advice is given. The underlying principle is that agreements reached by people themselves, as experts in what is right for them and their children, are more sustainable than court orders. For more information on how they can help you, call them on 029 2022 9692 or email [email protected].
Families Need Fathers/Both Parents Matter Cymru
Both Parents Matter Cymru is a Welsh charity which believes that children should grow up knowing the love of both their parents. The charity has a Helpline staffed Monday to Friday from 10 am to 7pm. There are support groups across Wales helping non-resident parents, mothers and fathers and also helping grandparents. In Cardiff there is also an emotional support group.
Find out more on their website, or over the phone at 08456 004446.
Relate Cardiff
Relate provide therapy specifically for relationship support, and not just in the context of couples’ counselling. Just because you’re breaking up, that doesn’t mean that you and your family can’t benefit from therapy; you want the process to go as smoothly as possible, and to minimise the impact of your divorce on family life and your career. Relate can help.
On their site, they state that they offer family counselling, relationship counselling, young people’s counselling and sex therapy at their Cardiff Relate office.
Together Friends
Together Friends is a site through which women can make friends. Their site can help you to make new friends by putting you in touch with like-minded women who share the same interests and live in the same area.
Family Action (Separated Parents Information Programme)
Family Action are a charity that provide practical, emotional and financial support to disadvantaged people in the UK. Their work is focused in a general sense on strengthening communities and families.
Their Separated Parents Information Programme ‘is a course that helps parents understand separation from a child’s point of view and learn the fundamental principles of how to manage and reduce the impact of conflict on their children.’ They state that the course is a safe place to learn:
- What children need most from their parents during a separation
- Practical skills that improve communication
- How to find and get support throughout a separation (particularly from other parents)
- How to deal with the emotional impact of separation
The course runs online and is available to single parents across south Wales. Places are normally offered to parents directed to them by Court, but it’s possible for you to book a place independently.
