There’s nothing so difficult as being a single parent. That’s why the team at our Liverpool office have put together this useful list of single parent resources you can find near you.
Gingerbread was one of the first ever organisations dedicated specifically to helping single parents. Founded in February 1918, they have provided advice and support, a platform for meeting other single parents, and help with jobs to those who need it. Besides providing direct assistance to parents, they have historically fought for reforms e.g. in the areas of housing access and child maintenance.
The Gingerbread community of forums and groups can be accessed online through their website (gingerbread.org.uk).
The Single Parent Action Network was a group that brought together various organisations and all sorts of resources for single parents across the UK. According to their site,
‘The website SingleParents.org.uk was born in 2008 and has supported thousands of single mums and single dads nationwide with every aspect of single parenthood from coping with separation and/or divorce, understanding Court procedures, surviving domestic abuse to sharing parenting ideas, information on work and benefits and so much more!
SingleParents.org.uk brings together essential information, expert advice, interactive learning, multi-media content, links to other support organisations and news for anyone who is parenting alone.’
Unfortunately, the group disbanded in 2016, but their site and all the resources on it remain available.
The Haven Project was established in 2011, as a group that supports Liverpool parents in public care proceedings. They help any parent, single parent or otherwise, through the 26 weeks of court proceedings (with an additional 12 months of ongoing support for parents whose children don't return home). Family Action are a charity that provide practical, emotional and financial support to disadvantaged people in the UK. Their work is focused in a general sense on strengthening communities and families.
Their Separated Parents Information Programme ‘is a course that helps parents understand separation from a child’s point of view and learn the fundamental principles of how to manage and reduce the impact of conflict on their children.’ They state that the course is a safe place to learn:
The course runs online and is available to single parents across Liverpool and Merseyside. Places are normally offered to parents directed to them by Court, but it’s possible for you to book a place independently.
