Divorce is the second most stressful life event, according to the Life Change Index Scale. It comes directly after the death of a spouse. The range of emotions experienced through family breakdown is huge, and it is easy to lose sight of your own wellbeing during the practical and legal challenges.
However, World Mental Health Day is a reminder that our mental health should be a priority, not just today but every day, especially at the times where we feel like it can’t be because we have too much else to think about. Easier said than done, but practice makes perfect.
The theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health in 2025 is ‘access to services – mental health in catastrophes and emergencies’ – promoting the importance of protecting mental health during global instability. During divorce and family breakdown, outside influences can also impact the way you feel. It can feel totally overwhelming.
We’ve put together some key resources for you to reach to this World Mental Health Day, both from the team here at Stowe but external support as well.
Remember: self-care is not selfish.
