Most adulterous boroughs in London revealed

1 min read

Croydon in south London is the most adulterous borough in the capital, government figures suggest.

According to figures from the Ministry of Justice, more married couples living in the borough cited adultery as grounds for divorce than anywhere else in London over the year to June 2013. A total of 2,664 petitions referring to adultery were filed in the capital that year, and 14 per cent of those originated in Croydon, the London Evening Standard reports.

Bromley, which borders Croydon to the east, is the next most adulterous, accounting for 13 per cent of metropolitan divorce petitions citing adultery.

By contrast, the inhabitants of Barnet, close to the top of north London, are the least likely to stray, with three per cent of petitions citing adultery coming from the borough.

Under Part 1 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, adultery is one of the five grounds for divorce available in current English law. The others are unreasonable behaviour; desertion for a continuous period of two years; separation for a continuous period of two years with the consent of the other person; and separation for a continuous period of five years.

There’s not much else to do in Croydon . . .

  2. Nick Langford says:

I wonder if this reflects the advice given by solicitors in those boroughs. Or the cultural mix of those boroughs. Or some other factor.
