Cohabitation agreements

Many couples are unaware that living together does not provide the same legal protections as marriage or a civil partnership. A cohabitation agreement can help clarify how finances, property and shared responsibilities will be managed throughout the relationship. More about our Stockport family law solicitors

  • How long can I expect my Stockport divorce to take?

There is no specific time that a divorce takes – this is due to the differing complexities of each case. For example, if you need to agree on child arrangements or settle financial matters, this can extend your divorce proceedings.

On average, a divorce takes between 6-8 months, but for a more accurate idea for your specific circumstances, get in contact with our divorce lawyers. They’ll listen to your situation and provide a more tailored timeframe.

  • Is there an estimated price for how much my divorce will cost me?

The price of each divorce depends on the complications related to each couple, so there isn’t an exact price for divorces.

However, there are some set costs included in every divorce, including the court fee, which is currently £612. Your solicitors’ fees are also part of every divorce.

  • How long is my divorce likely to take?

In England & Wales, for straightforward divorce cases, the process can take between 6 – 8 months. On average, the whole process takes approximately one year. Longer than 12 months is common for cases where there are drawn out disagreements on child and financial matters. It is impossible to predict exactly how long a divorce will take, though a good a divorce lawyer will help give you an educated estimate.

  • Do you handle cases at Stockport Family Court?

Yes. Most cases are resolved out of court, but if a hearing is required you will attend Stockport County Court and Family Court on Edward Street (SK1 3NF). Our solicitors will ensure you are fully prepared and supported throughout the process.

  • Where is Stockport Family Court and how do I get there?

Stockport County Court and Family Court is located on Edward Street in Stockport town centre, close to Merseyway Shopping Centre, Stockport Market Place, the historic Underbanks and the Town Hall. It is around a 10-minute walk from Stockport Station via Station Road and Merseyway, continuing past the shopping centre towards Edward Street and the civic quarter. From our Stockport office at Bank Chambers, 15 Market Place (SK1 1AR), the court is approximately a 5-minute walk via Prince’s Street and Edward Street, passing Stockport Market Hall and Merseyway Shopping Centre. Nearby cafés include Starbucks in Merseyway, Costa Coffee on Princes Street and independent favourite Coffee Block on Little Underbank if you arrive early.

If driving, parking is available at Merseyway Shopping Centre car park, Prince’s Street car park and Redrock car park, all within walking distance of the court.
