More about our Bromley family law solicitors near you

More about our Bromley family law solicitors near you

  • Do I need a reason to get divorced in England and Wales?

No, you do not need a reason to get divorced. The new no-fault divorce system means you do not need to prove blame or explain why the relationship ended.

The application simply states that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, and this can be made by one spouse alone or jointly. The court does not investigate the reasons for the divorce, and the application cannot be challenged on that basis.

  • How long does a divorce take in the UK?

Divorce in England and Wales follows a set legal timetable, so even where both people agree, it cannot be completed quickly. In straightforward and uncontested cases, the process usually takes around six to eight months from start to finish.
Timescales can be longer where financial matters or arrangements for children still need to be resolved. When advising clients in Bromley, delays are more often linked to these wider issues rather than the divorce application itself.

  • Does everything get split 50/50 in a UK divorce?

No. There is no automatic rule that everything is divided equally in a divorce. Rather than applying a fixed percentage, the court considers what is fair in the circumstances. This includes factors such as income, housing needs, the length of the marriage, and whether there are children to support.
An equal split can be appropriate in some cases, but it is not the starting point. Much of the confusion comes from the assumption that finances and assets are split 50/50 in divorce, when the legal focus is on fairness rather than equal division.

  • What am I entitled to financially in a divorce?

There is no fixed entitlement in a UK divorce, as outcomes depend on personal circumstances and the assets available. Financial settlements can include property, savings, pensions, and sometimes ongoing income, with children’s needs usually taking priority where relevant.
Although outcomes can differ, decisions are guided by a statutory framework and must fall within what the law considers reasonable. A divorce solicitor can advise how this framework is likely to apply in individual circumstances.

  • What happens if we separate but never divorce?

If you separate but remain married, you are still legal spouses. This means financial claims between you usually remain open, regardless of how long you live apart. It can also affect inheritance, pensions, and your ability to remarry.

Separation alone does not create a clean break.

The ongoing legal position of being separated but not divorced is something many people only become aware of later. This is often when circumstances change.

  • How much does divorce cost?

The overall cost of a divorce will vary depending on the specific issues involved, such as financial settlements, property division, or child arrangements. After talking to you about your situation, your solicitor can provide a cost estimate. Further information is available in our guide to divorce costs, and we provide more detail in our guide to family law fees. We also offer a fixed-fee divorce service for straightforward divorces.

  • Do you handle cases at Bromley Family Court?

Yes. Most cases are resolved out of court, but if a hearing is required you will attend Bromley County Court and Family Court on College Road (BR1 3PX). Our solicitors will ensure you are fully prepared and supported throughout the process.

  • Where is Bromley Family Court and how do I get there?

Bromley County Court and Family Court is located on College Road in Bromley town centre, close to The Glades Shopping Centre, Bromley South Station and Churchill Theatre. It is around a 5–10 minute walk from Bromley South Station via Elmfield Road towards College Road.

From our Bromley office at the Old Town Hall on Tweedy Road (BR1 3FE), the court is within easy walking distance via East Street and College Road. Nearby cafés include Starbucks and Costa Coffee in The Glades and independent favourite Copper Ceylon on East Street if you arrive early.

If driving, parking is available at The Glades car parks and Elmfield Road car park both within walking distance of the court.

  • During a divorce settlement, what happens to our family finances?

No two marriages are the same and this is also true for their finances. Here at Stowe Family Law, we understand that it’s never easy to discuss money – especially during separation. This is why our divorce lawyers listen to your circumstances and provide tailored solutions and support from your very first conversation.

Our Bromley team have experience in various types of financial settlements, including pensions, investments from high-net-worth individuals, property, international assets, and even assets you owned prior to the marriage. We’ve even helped set up freezing orders if you suspect your ex is hiding or diversifying assets.

Whatever your situation, our divorce lawyers in Bromley will take into consideration various aspects when building your financial settlement. This includes the length of the marriage, your standard of living when married, as well as the wealth of each individual during and after the relationship. All to create a fair and just financial settlement that allows everyone to move forward.

  • Does your team offer any non-confrontational resolution of family disputes?

We recognise that going to court isn’t the right solution for everyone. At Stowe, where possible we resolve all issues with alternative dispute resolution, such as arbitration, collaborative law, or mediation. With this in mind, you can trust that we have the skills and expertise to guide you through this process with ease. By finding solutions through dialogue, it saves everyone both time and money as well as making the process more amicable.

  • Do you have any in-house accountancy support?

We’re proud to say that our award-winning team has been recognised by the Legal 500 for their incredible ability to trace assets from around the world. On top of that, they have experience in untangling complex financial structures and providing precise valuations.
