More about us – divorce solicitors Slough

More about us – divorce solicitors Slough

  • Do I need a solicitor to get divorced in the UK?

You are not legally required to use a solicitor to get divorced in the UK. Some people complete the divorce application themselves, particularly where the situation is straightforward.
However, divorce often involves more than the application alone. Issues around finances, children, or delays caused by poor communication can make the process more complicated.
A divorce solicitor can explain the legal steps, deal with paperwork, and help you understand where advice may be needed before problems arise.

  • What happens after I separate but before the divorce is finalised?

Separation is often a practical stage rather than a legal one. Separating does not, by itself, change financial responsibilities or arrangements for children.
During this period, couples may still share finances, remain jointly responsible for debts, and make informal arrangements about living situations and childcare. Because these arrangements are usually temporary and not legally binding, people who are separated but not divorced often feel uncertain about their position.
Early legal advice from our family lawyers can help clarify what remains legally shared and what can be agreed informally. For more information, you can read our guide to separation agreements.

  • When should I speak to a family law solicitor about separation or divorce?

Many people speak to a family law solicitor before separating or shortly after thinking about a divorce or separation. This can help them understand the legal process and their position before making decisions.
Early advice is helpful where there are children, property, pensions, or ongoing financial ties. An initial discussion is usually about providing information and explaining options, rather than starting formal proceedings.

  • Do mothers and fathers have equal parental rights in the UK?

In the UK, the law focuses on parental responsibility rather than whether someone is a mother or father. Where both parents have parental responsibility, their legal rights and responsibilities are broadly the same.
Important decisions about a child, such as education or medical treatment, are expected to involve both parents. Day-to-day arrangements may vary depending on the child’s needs and circumstances. A family law solicitor can explain how parental responsibility applies in practice.

  • How can a family law solicitor help protect my interests during separation?

A family law solicitor can help by explaining your legal position during separation and identifying issues that may have longer-term consequences. This often includes advice on finances, business interests, informal agreements, and arrangements for children.

They can also help you understand which decisions are reversible and which may limit options later.

Our family lawyers in Slough regularly advise clients at this stage. They can provide clear explanations to help people make informed decisions as matters progress.

  • How much does divorce cost?

Divorce costs will vary due to the issues that need to be addressed. After an initial discussion, your solicitor will be able to provide an estimate tailored to your circumstances. Matters such as financial settlements, property issues, or child arrangements can add complexity and impact the overall cost. Our guide to divorce costs and family law fees guide explain this in more detail. For straightforward divorces, we also offer a fixed-fee divorce service.

  • Do you handle cases at Slough Family Court?

Yes. Most cases are resolved out of court, but if a hearing is required you will attend Slough County Court and Family Court on Windsor Road (SL1 2HE). Our solicitors will ensure you are fully prepared and supported throughout the process.

  • Where is Slough Family Court and how do I get there?

Slough County Court and Family Court is located on Windsor Road, close to Slough town centre, The Curve, Queensmere Observatory Shopping Centre and Slough Railway Station. It is around a 10–15 minute walk from Slough Station via Brunel Way and Wellington Street towards Windsor Road.

From our Slough office at The Future Works, 2 Brunel Way (SL1 1XL), the court is within walking distance through the town centre civic area. Nearby cafés include Starbucks and Costa Coffee in Queensmere Observatory Shopping Centre and independent favourite Black Sheep Coffee on the High Street if you arrive early.

If driving, parking is available at Queensmere Observatory Car Park and Hatfield Road Car Park, both within walking distance of the court.

  • Is trying marriage mediation or counselling essential before applying for a divorce?

Whilst there’s nothing legally that states you and your partner should try counselling or mediation prior to divorce, it is usually expected that you will try. We understand that the idea of marriage counselling can be scary or make your eyes roll like ‘How will this help?’, but it can provide real benefits for some couples.
