We advise on all aspects of child law, including everyday decisions about custody and contact, setting up child maintenance, and helping grandparents stay involved in their grandchildren’s lives.
Where possible, we encourage parents to use constructive options such as family mediation to reach an agreement. But, when disputes cannot be resolved, we have the expertise to apply for and secure the right court orders, such as child arrangement orders or clean break orders, to protect your children’s welfare.
We also act in more complex cases, including international relocation disputes and matters that overlap with the Court of Protection when vulnerable children are involved. With experience representing families at Newcastle Family Court and across the North East, our team will guide you with sensitivity and strength.
If you need clear advice on custody, arrangements, or your children’s rights, speak to our Newcastle child law solicitors today.
Regional Director Rachel Roberts and Managing Partner Chris Birch bring over 30 years of combined experience in family law. Under their guidance, we provide accurate, empathetic legal advice in Newcastle, blending deep knowledge of family law with a genuine concern for our clients. To avoid protracted processes, we may take an out-of-court settlement method. However, we understand that this is only sometimes possible. When litigation is necessary to reach a just conclusion, we have extensive litigation experience. We are fully aware of the level of legal knowledge needed to help you and your family get through this extremely trying time.
As a local family law firm, we customise our strategies and legal counsel to meet the needs of each client, assisting you from beginning to end with the pragmatic, emotional, and legal facets of divorce (and other types of separation). Additionally, the Solicitors Regulation Authority thoroughly regulates our family law practice.

Yes! Our divorce lawyers have been helping Newcastle couples with their applications for over 50 years.
We’ll work with you to start the divorce process (which can’t begin until you’ve been married for 12 months) by submitting your application (Form D8) to the courts. It’s important to note that this process can be done as a sole applicant or as joint applications alongside your ex. No matter what, this requires a payment of £612.
If you are asked to respond to a divorce application, it simply means that your ex has begun the divorce process.
Whatever side of the divorce application you are on, our lawyers are here to guide you through the process with care and expertise.
There is no set time on how long a divorce will take, but typically the process lasts between 6-8 months. However, this is completely dependent on the complexities involved.
For example, any financial issues, child arrangements, or issues you or your ex may have with the application.
Our divorce solicitors can work alongside you to reduce any blockers and speed up the process for you.

Getting divorced is an incredibly stressful time without being asked to respond to a divorce application. We recognise it’s a lot to handle alone, but not with us by your side.
From our very first call, we’ll be here for any questions or concerns you may have – such as how to respond to a divorce application. You simply need to accept the application and decide if you want to dispute it. We understand that the legal jargon can make this more complicated, but we’re here to guide you through it.

We’ll work with you and your ex-partner to create an arrangement that works for everyone. No matter what, we always strive to put your children first, as we recognise just how difficult this time is for them.
To enter a civil partnership dissolution, you need to have been in your partnership for at least a year. After that, you’ll be entitled to all the benefits couples getting divorced receive.
Any type of separation is emotionally taxing, but especially for those in a civil partnership. For some reason, less people understand what is required to dissolve a civil partnership, but that’s where we come in.
Our lawyers understand just how difficult this time is, which is why we’ll be by your side from the start. We can help you with your separation and what comes with it, such as child arrangements or financial settlements.

What to ask before hiring a Newcastle lawyer
It really depends on what’s involved.
If your case is complex then an hourly rate will be required. These are broken down for you by your Solicitor before we proceed. Pricing can also be impacted by the experience of the solicitor involved, but a ballpark figure would be around £200 – 400 per hour.
If your case is straightforward, we can often offer a fixed fee.
You’ll always get a clear cost breakdown before anything starts.
We do.
For simple, uncontested divorces, a fixed fee might be the right choice. Prices typically begin at £750 plus VAT, with a court fee on top.
We’ll let you know straight away if that option suits your case
Yes – you won’t be left to explain things yourself. Your solicitor will handle the hearing, speak on your behalf and guide you through what to expect before you go in.
We don’t offer legal aid, but we do have other options. Some clients ask for fixed-fee work, one-off advice, or help preparing documents.
If you might qualify for legal aid elsewhere, we’ll explain where to go.
You usually begin with a MIAM, which checks if mediation is possible.
If not, we help you fill out a C100 form and prepare everything for court. The court fee is currently £232 as on September 2025.
Most first hearings are listed within two or three months.
