Key information about Self serve divorce

How is Self serve divorce different to Lawyer negotiation?

Self serve divorce is different to our popular lawyer-led service as it gives you more flexibility in what you’d like to carry out yourself and what you need support with.

You’ll represent yourself and manage the process, with our legal advice for those items agreed within the scope of work.

Is Self serve divorce a fixed fee service?

Self serve divorce is not set at a fixed fee. After your initial meeting with a lawyer, we will create a scope of work which defines what we will do as part of the service. Our work is still charged at an hourly rate, but we will be able to estimate how many hours of work are required for the help you’ve asked us for.

With Self serve divorce we will do as much, or as little, work as you require.

Can I change my mind and transfer to the Lawyer negotiation service?

Yes you’re able to transfer over to our traditional lawyer-led service if you’ve already started using Self serve divorce, you may want to do this if your case becomes more complex than expected or if you’re worried about the direction of your case and require more support.

Simply let your lawyer know you’d like to discuss switching and they can arrange this for you.

Using these services means you will undertake most of the admin, manage the process, and represent yourself, while having legal advice at critical points to reduce the risk of errors.

How does Self serve divorce work?

To start, you must have a paid Initial Strategy Meeting with a Stowe lawyer. They will discuss your case and our services in more detail, assess whether it is suitable, and determine if you wish to proceed.

If you decide to proceed immediately, you will receive a follow-up letter, for which there is a charge, that clearly outlines the scope of work we will do (called a retainer) and an estimate of costs.

If you need time to think it through, we offer a free follow-up meeting to ensure we understand your needs and the scope of the work. If agreed, we will prepare the scope document, for which there is a charge, and send a cost estimate.

You will need to complete this process for each guided service you use. Once agreed, you will follow the standard onboarding process for Stowe clients.

Common questions about Self serve divorce

Common questions about Self serve divorce

  • How much does Self serve divorce cost?

It is important to note that Self service divorce is not a fixed-fee package. Services will be charged at an hourly rate. You will receive this information in a cost estimate before signing up. Because the scope of work is very specific, cost estimates will give you a narrower range.

As with our full retainer services, you will be required to pay upfront and place money on account at set times throughout your case.

We will adhere to the cost estimate where possible. However, if circumstances require us to do more work than anticipated, we will provide you with an updated cost estimate before any additional work is done.

  • Can you use Self serve for other case types?

No, Self serve divorce is not suitable for all family law cases. We offer only a range of options focused on a particular area of law (as detailed on this page). If you are looking for advice in other areas of family law, you will require a fixed-fee or hourly rate retainer option. A member of our team will be able to advise you on the suitability of your case at the enquiry stage.

  • What is not covered by Self serve divorce?

It is important to note the following about Self serve divorce:

    • We cannot provide legal advice before a retainer and cost estimate have been agreed.
    • We cannot provide legal advice on anything outside the scope of our retainer. If you require additional advice, you must set up a new retainer, which may incur further costs.
    • We cannot instruct third-party experts or send communications on your behalf, such as to the court or other professionals.
    • You will be responsible for selecting, instructing, and paying any third-party experts and sending communications to them.
    • We can only help you with the specific issue you’re seeking guidance on, and that’s covered by the service retainer.
    • We will provide you with advice and support with documents, but you are representing yourself and are responsible for meeting any deadlines set by the court or any third party.
    • We will support you with the issues you have sought advice on but also consider what is in your best interests. If we have any concerns that you cannot handle problems on your own, we can recommend our full retainer service. If you do not wish to instruct us on this basis, we can decline to act for you.

Seb represents clients in all aspects of family law and is well versed in handling complex and high-net-worth cases often with an international element. He is described in the Legal 500 as practical, realistic and personable’, ‘pragmatic and sensitive’ and ‘excellent, intelligent and thoughtful’.
