Matthew Taylor

Team Leader Partner, Liverpool, Manchester & Chester

I am noted in the Legal 500 for being ‘excellent’ and thinking ‘through cases very carefully to make very sound tactical decisions.’ My specialism is resolving financial issues following a divorce or separation and I frequently advise clients on cohabitation issues. My previous work in the charity sector improves my ability to support clients with empathy through what is an emotionally difficult time.

Specialisms

Matthew is a financial specialist with a particular focus on resolving financial issues following divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership. He is also frequently instructed to advise in respect of claims by cohabitants, whether in relation to disputed property interests in TOLATA proceedings or financial claims for children under Schedule 1 of the Children Act. Matthew also has a wealth of experience of pre-nuptial, post-nuptial and cohabitation agreements. His cases involve mid-to-high net worth individuals, ranging from senior professionals and business owners to celebrities, and frequently include complex company structures, pensions and issues concerning trusts.

Matthew also acts for parents in disputes concerning child law, including those where a parent wishes to relocate with the children elsewhere in England and Wales or to another country.

Matthew is a Resolution Accredited Specialist for complex financial and cohabitation cases, is the Chair of Merseyside Resolution and sits on numerous Family Law committee in the region including through the Liverpool Family Court and Liverpool Law Society.

Approach

Matthew adopts a pragmatic and clear style, aiming to best meet his client’s needs in the quickest and most cost-effective manner. A firm believer that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach, Matthew is equally comfortable negotiating directly with opposing solicitors, supporting clients through mediation or representing them in court proceedings, depending on which process is the most appropriate for each client and any children involved.

With a background in the charity sector, Matthew prides himself on his ability to support clients through what is an emotionally difficult time in an empathetic manner, but allies this with advice that is always realistic and to the point. A determined negotiator, Matthew fights hard to achieve the best possible outcome for each of his clients.

Training & Employment

Having worked in PR for a leading Liverpool theatre and then two prominent national charities, Matthew studied a law conversion course and qualified as a solicitor in 2014 following the completion of his training contract with a boutique London entertainment and family law firm. He remained working there exclusively in family law for one year after qualifying, before returning to his adopted home of Liverpool where he spent five years working for one of the leading Family law teams in the North West.

Awards

Liverpool Law Society Awards 2019 – Rising Star – Highly Commended

Outside of Work

Outside of work, Matthew is very family-focused and can usually be found being chased around by his two young sons. On the rare occasions when he gets some time to himself, Matthew enjoys playing golf, watching American Football, drinking craft beer and cooking, although not all at the same time.
