Specialisms

Katie deals with a wide breadth of family law matters. Katie is experienced and specialises in advising clients on financial matters arising on divorce and the dissolution of civil partnerships, as well as cohabiting couples. She has a wealth of experience acting for high net worth clients, as well as those with more modest assets, and resolving their finances on divorce, both in a non-court dispute resolution setting, and also when litigation is required.

She acted for the wife in the reported case of ND v LD (financial remedy: needs) [2022]:  ND v LD (financial remedy: needs) [2022] EWFC B15 (10 March 2022). This was a rarely reported Deputy District Judge case looking at the division of modest assets and which also involved the implication of special measures.

Katie has a particular specialism in cases involving arrangements for children, with sensitive and complex issues of domestic abuse. Katie has extensive experience acting for clients who are involved in private law children proceedings, (and has previous experience assisting clients in public law proceedings), enabling her to deal calmly with the complexities of allegations of domestic abuse, such as coercive control in a calm yet robust manner.

Approach

Clients appreciate Katie’s attentiveness to their cases, and her caring and supportive approach to what are often difficult circumstances, both practically and emotionally. Katie is proactive and personable while always being aware of proportionality and costs. Katie ensures that her clients are robustly represented, and that the advice they are receiving is sensible, practical and cost effective, considering the bigger picture as much as the detail.

Training and experience

Katie studied History with Sociology at the University of Leeds, graduating in 2013. She went on to complete the Graduate Diploma in Law before starting her career in family law in 2014, working as a paralegal in the children team at a leading specialist family law firm. Katie studied the Legal Practice Course, obtaining a Masters in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Law, achieving a Distinction.

Since qualification, Katie has worked at highly regarded Legal 500 firms in London and Hertfordshire.

She joined Stowe as a Senior Associate in June 2025. She recently acted for the wife in the reported case of ND v LD (financial remedy: needs) [2022]:  ND v LD (financial remedy: needs) [2022] EWFC B15 (10 March 2022). This was a rarely reported Deputy District Judge case looking at the division of modest assets and which also involved the implication of special measures.

Accreditations, memberships and awards

Katie is recommended in the Legal 500 UK as a key lawyer, and a ‘key name for children matters’. She has been recognised by clients and professionals:

‘Katie Stewart has been sensitive and supportive during my court proceedings. Nothing is ever too much, and I honestly believe that I would not be where I am today without her. She approaches my situation with integrity and care. Katie is the epitome of professionalism.’

‘Katie Stewart is a star. Clients feel well-supported and are being robustly represented but will also trust her judgment on tricky issues. She is a joy to work with’.

Katie is a member of Resolution and promotes a non-confrontational approach to family law.

Outside of work

Katie enjoys spending time with family and friends (and her various pets!). She likes keeping fit at the gym, going for long walks in the countryside and a good murder mystery book.
